Dr Cai Yi-fong, a specialist in child dentistry from the Taipei Medical University Hospital, said that if a child's level of the sugar-fermenting bacteria Streptococcus mutans is high, his or her parents will usually show high levels too.

So it's Streptococcus mutans that causes the mischief. If parents have bad teeth, their children are likely to have them too. Cai said it is even possible to calculate the possibility of the youngsters getting rotten teeth.It can get passed on by the ordinary things you do in life, like kissing them, feeding them and brushing their teeth.

Streptococcus mutans gets absorbed into the teeth, so parents should be especially careful when their children are growing teeth from between four months and three years. But that doesn't mean you can't kiss or feed your children at all. Cai says parents just need to observe a few basics.

Parents should maintain good oral hygiene, he said. When they have sorted out the condition of their teeth, the levels of Streptococcus mutans in their mouths will drop.

And as for whether it is safe for adults to kiss each other, Cai said the amount and kinds of oral bacteria in adults' mouths are pretty similar. As long as you don't introduce additional bacteria, you shouldn't worry too much.

北醫附設醫院兒童牙科醫師蔡宜峰：其實小朋友的轉糖鏈球菌菌量高，其實大多父母的轉糖鏈球菌的菌量也比較高，主要是是口水裡的轉糖鏈球菌在作怪。父母擁有滿口蛀牙的，幼兒蛀牙情況也較嚴重，而且能夠預測孩子未來蛀牙機率的轉糖鏈球菌量也很高。透過生活的一些小細節，親吻、餵食、刷牙，都有可能會傳染。

轉糖鏈球菌主要是吸附在牙齒上，所以，小baby四到六個月開始，到三歲的長牙時期，家長得要當心。不過，這並不表示親親或餵食就會有問題，只要家長把握簡單要領，也可以和寶寶有親密互動。

北醫附設醫院兒童牙科醫師蔡宜峰：父母維持好的口腔衛生，口內的情形、蛀牙等若有經過適當的處理，會使父母口腔轉糖鏈球菌量減少。

大家一定很好奇，那大人親親會不會有問題，醫師說，成人的口腔菌量和種類已經固定，只要不受外來細菌的干擾，民眾不用太擔心。
